Most music people own now is compressed. Streaming made that normal, and for the bus or the gym it is fine. But the moment a record hits a proper club system, the format you are playing stops being an abstract number and becomes something the room can feel. This is why serious DJs care about WAV.
What the numbers mean
Two numbers describe the quality of an audio file. Sample rate, measured in kHz, is how many times per second the sound is captured. 44.1kHz is CD quality. 96kHz captures more than twice as often, which preserves more detail and gives a master more room to be worked on cleanly. Bit depth, measured in bits, is the resolution of each of those samples. More bits means a wider dynamic range and a lower noise floor. A 32-bit float file effectively removes the risk of clipping in production and keeps the full detail of the master intact.
Why it matters on a big system
An MP3 saves space by throwing information away. It decides what you supposedly will not miss and deletes it. Through laptop speakers you often will not. Through a stack of subwoofers at 2am, you will: the top end gets brittle, the low end loses definition, and the headroom that lets a drop breathe is simply not there. A high-resolution WAV keeps all of it, so what you drop in your set is exactly what was mastered, with the punch and the space still attached.
When the difference is worth it
Be honest about the context. For casual listening, a good stream is fine. For anything you will play out, especially on an unfamiliar rig, the full-quality file is the safe choice. It gives you headroom to EQ, protects you when the system is loud, and never leaves you wondering whether the format is why the record sounds thin.
